Within Cells Interlinked

Music composition and live performance for an interactive lighting installation.

On the 1st of October 2021 the installation premiered in the former Silverdome in Huizen. A month later the building was demolished.

Within Cells Interlinked is an interactive light installation by Bram van Ravenhorst and Stan Bekker who together form Silence of the Lights. The sound design was done by Koen Bouman and was arranged live for this performance. A set of three collages made out of field recordings were dubbed on cassette to get a natural overdrive effect to represent the contrasting, deciding but sadly also threatened surroundings which form the basics of the sound design.

Mensch, Natur, Technik is a triology handling the duality between what is and what could be. The collages were recorded at home, on the road and in the threatened Amelisweerd forest. Dubbed only once, the wear of these tapes will form a transience equal to the general theme. Mensch, Natur, Technik is a trilogy which puts emphasis on the human-machine dialogue. The combination of the collages, digital generative sequencing and virtual synthesis generate the input for the lights. Everything is connected, generates data, manipulates and most of all; presents.

Silence of the Lights designed twenty Arcs for the installation, which in total host more than 12.000 individual light sources which can all be programmed separately. These lights are in contact with both the digital input of the generative sequences as the analog input from the tapes. Human interference controls both the in- and output which enables the light show as we perceive it.
